Recently a number of products have been introduced into the market which offer biodegradability of plastic products via a different approach. They work by the addition of a small amount of an additive to any type of plastic film during extrusion. This enables the film to totally biodegrade in compost and/or landfill situations, whilst not affecting its mechanical or optical properties in service.
With two of the three additive types, the onset of degradation only commences when the article is placed in sustained contact with the environment containing the micro-organisms responsible for the bio-degradation(i.e. disposed of) The time to total degradation typically takes between 1 & 5 years. With the other type however, both the time to onset of degradation and the time from onset to total degradation, may be adjusted albeit at an increased cost.
These systems produce a film which will totally degrade both aerobically and anaerobically to Carbon Dioxide, Water and a small amount of Methane, without any toxic effects on flora, or fauna.
